About the Project

Mavi Kortejo is a cortijo/family house structure located in the Basmane Region, near the Ancient City Of Smyrna.

The building was used as a family house until recently. It was registered as a rare structure in 2017.

It was purchased by TARKEM in 2017.

It is located on 945 Street, which opens to the Smyrna Agora Excavation Area in the Mezarlıkbaşı district, which is a continuation of the historical Kemeraltı Bazaar. The Historical Basmane Luxury Bath is located next to the structure.

The building will be used as a modern accommodation facility, a hostel, where bathrooms, toilets, kitchen and garden are shared, in a way that follows the cortijo lifestyle. It will create an affordable, quality accommodation opportunity for guests who want to stay in the historical area, especially backpackers and students. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience history in a historical area, in a special building.

The structure consists of a main building consisting of a basement and two floors, and single-storey volumes added to the main building to form a courtyard. There are shared bathrooms and a total of six rooms on the ground and first floors of the two-storey building. The single-storey sections contain rooms, a disabled toilet, a kitchen and an executive room. The basement of the main building will contain service areas such as a laundry and a storage area. The courtyard will be used by guests as a recreation area.

Kortejo/Cortijo is a Spanish word meaning “farmhouse”. Its architectural roots are similar to the courtyard villas of the Roman Period and the caravanserais built on the trade route (King's Road) that crossed Anatolia during the Persian Period. The first examples of single-entry structures surrounded by high walls, built as a necessity during the Isolation of the Jews in the Byzantine Period, emerged.

It generally consists of 8-10 m² rooms positioned around the courtyard, and common spaces that open to the courtyard or a common corridor. There is no bathroom, toilet or kitchen counter in the rooms. Bathroom and kitchen volumes are shared.

Architectural projects were drawn by İmge Mimarlık. It has been functionalized as a hostel to follow the family home lifestyle.

Due to pandemic conditions, it is temporarily used as an Urban Justice and Equality Unit by the Social Projects Department of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.
